ISKCON L.A. To Mark 40th Anniversary

Jun 12, CULVER CITY, CALIFORNIA (INDIA JOURNAL) — The ISKCON Los Angeles Hare Krishna Temple will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the consecration of Sri-Sri Rukmini-Dwarakanatha. They are the same Radha-Krishna murtis which were personally installed by the loving hands of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. The event will be commemorated by three days of special services and festivity, July 16-18. There will be a Julana-yatra (a swing ceremony for the Deities.) Original disciples of Srila Prabhupada who were present for the original installation and worship will speak of the event. The festival culminates on July 18, when the Deities will be offered a fresh flower outfit to wear and taken on procession around the temple.

The worship of the Deities here was originally established by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada after he had gone to great lengths to bring the Krsna tradition to the west from India in 1966. …Having taken up kirtan practice in Tompkins Square Park in New York, many followers of the beatnik and hippie movement of those days surrounded him and began to take a special interest in his instructions on Krsna bhakti, or devotional yoga in loving service to Lord Krishna.…He journeyed successively to Canada, San Franciso, Seattle and then Los Angeles where a storefront was already established for him by eager disciples awaiting his arrival there. As usual he gave his instruction on the four regulative principles of his movement, and emphasized the Hare Krishna mantra. At that time his disciples began their well-loved Los Angeles daily street kirtan on Hollywood Boulevard.

Eventually he helped them to purchase a church property to be converted into a temple for installation and worship of Sri-Sri Radha-Krishna. Later the Deities were re-named Rukmini-Dwarakanatha by him in honor of the Lord Krishna’s pastimes as a king and householder in Dwaraka. To this day that worship is continued, with six aratis and food offerings per day. Daily the silken dresses, jewelry and flower garlands are offered as per Srila Prabhupada’s specific instructions for worship.
