You must have heard about the 16 kalas of Lord Krishna. But many people don't know the reason behind these 16 kalas.
Krishna was born on Krishna paksha ashthami of Bhadrapad month under Rohini nakshatra at 12midnight in Vrushabh lagna. Ashthmi is also known as 'purna bali'.
According to astrology, there are 16 phases (kalas) of moon. Rohini is considered to be moon's favourite wife. Hence it is believed that Moon is at its best when there is Rohini nakshatra. Since Lord Krishna was born at such a time, he belongs to the chandra vansh and hence represents the whole chandra vansha and is believed to be the possessor of the 16 kalas of chandra (moon).
