Top 5 Hindu Festivals: August-September 2011

The months of August and September in the Hindu almanac are replete with festivals and holidays.

It begins with Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan, the unique tradition followed by sisters of tying a sacred thread on the wrist of their brothers.

This joyous festival is followed by Janmashthami or the birthday celebrations of Lord Krishna, which is observed with great gaiety.

But nothing beats the pomp and show of the great Ganesha festival called Ganesh Chaturthi, which falls in September.

This is followed by the even more energetic carnival of Onam that is mainly celebrated in the southern Indian coastal state of Kerala.

September ends with the beginning of the nine divine nights or Navarati that involves fasts and rituals in honor of Durga, the mother goddess.

Below are the dates of the major Hindu holidays for August and September 2011.
