Lord Krishna’s Abode

The Guruvayur temple in Kerala is one of the most famous temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. Some of the other most important ones are Jagannath Puri in Orissa, Venkatachalapati in Andhra Pradesh, Nathdwara in Rajasthan and Dwaraka in Gujarat.

This south Indian temple is often referred to as the ‘Bhooloka Vaikuntam’ or ‘The abode of Lord Vishnu’. One of the reasons why this temple is so special is because the idol here, which is adorned with a tulsi garland, represents the avatar of Lord Vishnu that was unveiled to Vasudev and Devaki when they were awaiting Lord Krishna’s birth.
The idol at this temple is carved using Pathalanjana Sila, which is considered to be very sacred. According to legend, this idol was once worshipped by Lord Shiva in Kailash and then handed over to Lord Brahma. It changed several hands before the idol was finally installed at Guruvayur in the Thrissur district of Kerala. This idol represents a form of Lord Krishna with four arms that bear the conch, the Sudarshana Chakra, the mace and the lotus. The avatar of Krishna here is also referred to as Unni-Krishnan or even Balakrishnan.
